Dear Alphonse

** Our fight against meat and dairy industry propoganda continues!
Animal Justice Project submits complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency over misleading #WeEatBalanced campaign

Last month, the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) launchedWe Eat Balanced (https://weeatbalanced.com/?mc_cid=e9f042e24a&mc_eid=UNIQID) , - a campaign to promote British meat and dairy, drawing attention away from the increasing popularity of plant-based eating.

This heavily-funded campaign is a blatant attempt by the meat and dairy industries to sugar-coat the reality of animal exploitation. We Eat Balanced makes irresponsible and inaccurate claims about the sustainability of animal products, ignoring the current climate crisis that has been largely caused by animal consumption. Furthermore, the campaign insults plant-based eaters, implying that vegans are nutritionally deficient:

The campaign received an investment of £1.5 million (https://ahdb.org.uk/news/new-1-5m-campaign-to-encourage-consumers-to-eat-balanced-enjoy-the-food-you-eat?mc_cid=e9f042e24a&mc_eid=UNIQID) , which has been used to fund propaganda in supermarket aisles, on social media and even on British television.
In January, Animal Justice Project organised two Online Rallies to challenge the AHDB and to take over their hashtag. In our first Online Rally, our supporters joined us in holding the AHDB accountable for their actions, highlighting how their claims about the environment, animal welfare and human health are misleading.
In our second online action, we urged supporters to #ShareFacesNotProducts with the hashtag #WeEatBalanced. From 8am-8pm, our followers shared beautiful pictures of ex-industry animals living their best lives in sanctuary. Farm Sanctuary (https://www.farmsanctuary.org/?mc_cid=e9f042e24a&mc_eid=UNIQID) , Liberty Animal Sanctuary (https://libertyanimalsanctuary.bigcartel.com/?mc_cid=e9f042e24a&mc_eid=UNIQID) , Dean Farm Trust (https://deanfarmtrust.org.uk/?mc_cid=e9f042e24a&mc_eid=UNIQID) and The Retreat Animal Rescue (https://www.retreatanimalrescue.org.uk/?mc_cid=e9f042e24a&mc_eid=UNIQID) kindly joined us to share the stories of their rescued residents.

We hope that, through this action, anyone stumbling upon the We Eat Balanced hashtag will be met with an abundance of adorable animals, instead of meat and dairy industry propaganda!

** Join our next rally!
Join our upcoming online rally against #WeEatBalanced!

We will rally on Thursday 25th February 5-7pm BST to show that in order to create a sustainable and compassionate world, we must live a vegan lifestyle and eat a plant-based diet. Under our
Farming for a Future (https://animaljusticeproject.com/farmingforafuture/?mc_cid=e9f042e24a&mc_eid=UNIQID) campaign, we will promote the ending of bailouts for animal agriculture, and the promotion of nationwide, accessible plant-based initiatives.

Information will be posted into the event on the day including pre-written messages for Facebook and Instagram, as well as pre-written tweets.

When exploitative businesses can no longer commercialise animals, they fall apart. It is time to change this system, to prioritise effective conservation that does not exploit and imprison animals.

** Regular giving helps us grow

As a growing animal rights organisation, we need regular supporters more than ever. Regular donations help us to plan ahead, bringing our one-of-a-kind campaigns to life.

Our small team of passionate activists notice every donation that comes our way, and we are wholeheartedly grateful for your support.

We promise to use your donation to create a better world for animals. We are the only organisation in the UK currently focusing on the integration of the beef and dairy industries, and we are the only organisation to have ever installed cameras in a duck slaughterhouse.

** The Importance of Language in Activism
Peter AK - Social Media and Campaigns Coordinator

Was there ever a moment that you found yourself saying something you didn’t mean? Or, when you look back on an occasion, you find that the words you spoke seem alien to you?

What if I said that some of the words you use today may one day seem like that? This blog piece will dive into that idea, so please keep reading and we’ll dive in together.

So, the words we speak are given to us through the structures of our societies - from our environment; from the humans we are raised by and with; and from our schools. We then filter these words through our own minds, which creates a diversity of language use unique to each of us - our very own idiolects.

However, there are many similarities between our language due to the power of the societal structures in place around us. This means that the words we use would be different or have different connotations if our society was different.

If you lived 2500 years ago and said ‘hippopotamus’ you would have known yourself to be describing a ‘river horse’, but fast-forward to today and the word is still here but the original meaning has largely been forgotten.

Now, that was just an interesting little example of how language and meaning change through societal changes, but there’s something important we need to talk about in relation to this point.

We need to talk about how the language we use has an impact and that impact can potentially be a negative one.
