Hi Lou,

Given your interest in the Institute’s Co-Existence work, I wanted to share with you our new education policy briefing, “Building Resilience in the Classroom”. It calls on policymakers to better prepare young people to guard against the dangers of radicalisation and extremist narratives.

Please click here (https://institute.global/insight/co-existence/building-resilience-classroom?utm_source=Institute+Interest&utm_campaign=ffbd734917-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_12_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a778d447d9-ffbd734917-89638515) to read the briefing in full.

Now more than ever, young people need an education through which they can develop the dialogue and critical-thinking skills to understand and respect others, and successfully engage with difference. To promote co-existence and counter extremism, it’s important to address the factors that contribute and lead to violence, not just the violence itself.

Generation Global, our global schools education programme, aims to build a generation of open-minded young people at ease with diversity and difference. It has supported teachers in over 40 countries to help more than 340,000 students develop dialogue skills and practise them with their peers around the world, in facilitated conversations. You can find out more about the programme here (https://institute.global/insight/co-existence/cultivating-students-open-mindedness-through-dialogue?utm_source=Institute+Interest&utm_campaign=ffbd734917-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_12_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a778d447d9-ffbd734917-89638515) .

“Building Resilience in the Classroom” summarises the findings and recommendations of two research projects undertaken by the Institute combined with learnings from Generation Global.

It reveals a significant and global implementation gap between policy and practice, identifying three areas for reform: curricula, resources and teaching. The briefing provides a number of recommendations for governments, schools and teachers to address this gap, including:
* Governments should demonstrate the value of education in the fight against extremism by prioritising the teaching of global competencies.
* Teachers should be trained in modern, interactive education practices that encourage the skills of dialogue (http://institute.global/insight/co-existence/essentials-dialogue?utm_source=Institute+Interest&utm_campaign=ffbd734917-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_12_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a778d447d9-ffbd734917-89638515) .
* Schools should host difficult conversations (https://institute.global/insight/co-existence/dealing-difficult-dialogue?utm_source=Institute+Interest&utm_campaign=ffbd734917-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_12_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_a778d447d9-ffbd734917-89638515) on contentious issues to expose young people to diverse viewpoints.
